Chlorinators work by an erosion process where the water that passes through them slowly dissolves the chlorine or bromine tablets in them. Although they are called “automatic feeders” the only thing “automatic” about them is that the chlorine dissolves as long as the pump is running. It is still up to you to monitor the amount of chlorine in the water using your test kit. We are always being asked - what setting should the chlorinator valve be set on? This varies depending upon the size of you pool or spa, your bather load, temperature and the time of the year it is. In other words, you have to keep changing your chlorinator valve setting so it delivers just what level you need.
Proper installation of your chlorinator is necessary for proper operation. Where the chlorinator is installed in your system is also important. Tablet chlorine and bromine have a very low pH and the dissolved tablet liquid can be very damaging to your equipment, flow meter, gauges and especially your heater on a spa.

OFF-LINE (Free standing) CHLORINATORS
we like to recommend these chlorinators as they are easy to work on and trouble shoot. We do see a lot of these chlorinators hooked up backwards. Basically, the hose that goes to the control valve on the chlorinator is the inlet to the chlorinator, not the outlet. The valve is supposed to control the amount of water going into the chlorinator not coming out of it. The tube to pipe fitting for the valve hose should be mounted on the pipe that goes from the pump to the backwash valve. This is where the pressure is the greatest. The outlet line of the chlorinator, which comes from the bottom check elbow on the Rainbow 300 and 300-19 chlorinator and from a ˝” elbow mounted at the top of the RB-300-29X chlorinator, should be mounted on the return line from the filter going back to the pool. On a spa system the outlet hose must be mounted on the heater pipe outlet as far away from the heater as possible. Whenever you can, the pipe to hose fittings should be tapped in so that they are not directly over any equipment (like your pump motor) to avoid damage from leaky fittings. The chlorine tablets are very corrosive and lid ‘O’ rings, gaskets, hoses and fittings will need to be replaced from time to time.

IN-LINE CHLORINATORS

# 171096 RB-320 - holds 11/3" tablets or 98/1" tablets

IN-LINE CHLORINATORS need to be mounted on the return pipe going from the filter to your pool or on a spa the return line from your heater going back to the spa. In-line chlorinators should be mounted lower than the outlet line on your heater so that chlorinated water does not back feed into your heater when your pump is off. Occasionally we run into a water feature such as a waterfall that it would be useful to chlorinate to fight algae. On a pump only system without a filter an in-line chlorinator should be used.
